Why this role exists -

ThunderClap is building a global design agency that produces international-level work. We're not there yet. But we're getting there fast. We’ve grown to a 30-person team in just over a year, working with some of the best B2B tech companies across SaaS, AI, and deep tech. As our client work scales in complexity and ambition, we need stronger creative leadership - especially in illustration. This role exists to own and elevate illustration as a craft, system, and storytelling tool across our projects, while guiding designers and illustrators to produce consistent, high-quality, brand-led work.

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept -

As an Art Director (Illustration-Focused) at ThunderClap, you’ll be responsible for shaping the visual direction of our illustration work across websites, brand systems, and motion-led experiences. You’ll lead illustration thinking from concept to execution - defining styles, setting quality benchmarks, mentoring illustrators, and ensuring every visual decision serves a strategic purpose. This is a hands-on leadership role: you’ll create, critique, direct, and elevate.

Your Day-to-Day:

• Own the illustration vision and quality bar across client projects.

• Conceptualise and art-direct illustration systems that align with brand strategy, messaging, and conversion goals.

• Lead and mentor illustrators, providing clear direction, feedback, and growth guidance.

• Collaborate closely with brand designers, motion designers, and strategists to ensure illustrations integrate seamlessly into broader design systems.

• Translate abstract ideas, complex products, and technical narratives into clear, engaging visual stories.

• Art-direct illustrations for explainers, motion, and video-led experiences, ensuring they’re designed with animation in mind.

• Review and refine illustration work for consistency, craft, and strategic alignment.

• Pitch visual concepts and illustration directions to clients with confidence and clarity.

• Balance creative ambition with timelines, scope, and delivery standards.

• Manage illustration and animation resources for website projects and ensure there’s inter-department collaboration.

What Makes You Stand Out -

• 6+ years of experience in illustration and visual design, with at least 1–2 years in a lead or art direction role.

• A strong portfolio showcasing illustration-led systems, not just individual assets.

• Proven experience illustrating for web, brand, and motion/explainer contexts.

• Deep understanding of design fundamentals - composition, color, typography, hierarchy, and storytelling.

• Ability to think in systems, not just single visuals.

• Strong communication skills - you can articulate creative decisions and give clear, actionable feedback.

• Comfort working in fast-moving, collaborative environments.

• Proficiency with industry-standard tools (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and relevant illustration workflows).

Bonus Skills -

• Experience working closely with motion designers or animators

• Basic understanding of animation principles

• Exposure to branding and marketing strategy

• Familiarity with UX/UI and how illustration supports product storytelling
