How Dropbox Turned a Single Dot into a Story About Design Craft
How Creative Director Charmie Shah and Motion Designer Ayush Sharma brought Dropbox’s Design Matters keynote to life

For Dropbox’s 2024 Design Matters keynote in Copenhagen, what began as a presentation evolved into a deeply intentional visual narrative about craft, quality, and the cultural transformation of design.
At the center of the story was Dropbox’s year-long journey toward building a stronger culture of craftsmanship across its design organization, led by insights and reflections shared by VP of Design, Alastair Simpson. The challenge was to translate these ideas into a keynote experience that felt emotionally resonant, visually distinct, and worthy of the story being told.
The creative concept and overall keynote design were led by Charmie Shah, who worked closely with Dropbox’s leadership to shape the narrative framework, creative direction, and visual storytelling for the event. Drawing inspiration from Alastair’s personal affinity for the “dot” as a recurring visual motif, the keynote transformed a simple circle into a powerful metaphor for focus, iteration, connection, and continuous refinement.

The dot became the connective thread across the entire presentation system, evolving through each chapter of the story to reflect moments of ambition, uncertainty, growth, experimentation, critique, and craft.
Every keynote sequence was first conceptualized and designed at the storyboard level by Charmie, establishing the narrative arc and visual language for the presentation. Motion Designer Ayush Sharma then brought these concepts to life through animation, translating the storyboarded sequences into fluid motion graphics that elevated the storytelling and added depth, rhythm, and emotional nuance to each transition.
The result was a keynote experience that moved beyond slides into cinematic visual storytelling.
